Getting to Know Historic Downtown Chandler

Foundations

Chandler was founded at the turn of the twentieth century by Dr. Alexander John Chandler, a Canadian veterinarian who opened the San Marcos Hotel in 1913. He designed the downtown area with help of architects and city planners to be centered on the central park. The San Marcos hotel, now a successful conference center and golf resort, is still in business today.

Historic

Chandler has been recognized as a National Registry Historic District. The flux of traditional beauty and modern ideas give Chandler its charm and uniqueness. There are a great number of attractions held downtown, including quaint and one-of-a-kind shops, critically acclaimed restaurants, many art galleries, the Chandler Center for the Arts, and one of Arizona’s most prestigious wineries, Kokopelli.

Downtown

Downtown Chandler is more than just a beautiful place to be. There are so many fun things to do and see. Browse local shops for gifts or one-of-a-kind treasures. Check out the exhibits at the art galleries, or see a show at the Center for the Arts. The city also has a year-round Farmer’s Market every Thursday afternoon, and a monthly Art Walk to showcase local artists, in addition to many special events held in the square throughout the year.

Things to See

Kokopelli Winery also hosts events from time to time, including wine tasting events. The Center for the Arts has space for many exhibits and showings, in addition to a theater and auditorium equipped for lectures, plays, and other shows.

The center of downtown Chandler, Arizona Avenue, has been going under some exciting cosmetic changes. A several million dollar renovation is making Arizona Avenue a more pedestrian-friendly place to be by adding lanes for bicycles and ensuring crosswalk space. The project is just another example of how Chandler is expanding and focusing on being a great place to live and visit.
